Size and measuring your opening

Accurate to about 1/2 inch. We review your measurements with you.

Listed measurements describe the door, not your opening. Doors we resize or frame come out within about 1/8 inch.

For Install Ready, allow a rough opening about 3 inches wider and taller than the door. For this door, that is about 46 3/4 × 87 in. Measure the framing behind the trim. Check width at the top, middle and bottom, and height on both sides; use the smallest measurements.

Because this door has iron work, any resizing is reviewed with you before it is priced.

Keeping an existing frame? Measure between its jambs instead. We review your measurements and the proposed work with you.

Condition and character

Age remains in the worn edges, earlier hardware marks and variations in the surface. Antique doors can also vary in squareness and flatness; review this piece's measurements and condition with your installer.

Solid wood takes on and releases moisture with the seasons, so a door can swell, shrink or bow a little. If a change concerns you, send us photos and we will look at it with you.

Shop services: resizing, framing and Install Ready

Optional. With services, it arrives in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Our Lafayette workshop can get this door ready for your opening. Everything here is optional.

  • Restoration. We repair and restore the door in our shop.
  • Install Ready. We hang the door in a new frame with fitted hinges and a magnetic catch or ball latch, so it goes into your opening as one unit. Installation, casing, and handles, knobs or locks are not included; those are added on site.
  • Wax finish. For doors used indoors. Exterior doors ship unfinished; we do not offer exterior sealers.
  • Glass. Keep it, take it out, or replace it with clear tempered, diamond pattern or English pattern glass. Old glass may not meet today's safety glazing codes (Safety & Compliance).

A note on hardware. Most of our doors have thin European style rails, so a lock or working latch usually needs a shallow backset mortise lock or a similar knob. Otherwise, a push or pull knob or a lever works well.
